Cutie and the Beast (Fae Out of Water Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,174 ratings

One cursed fae warrior turned psychologist. One determined office temp. Hello, immovable object? Meet irresistible force.

Temp worker David Evans has been dreaming of Dr. Alun Kendrick ever since that one transcription job for him, because holy cats, that voice. Swoon. So when his agency offers him a position as Dr. Kendrick’s temporary office manager, David neglects to mention that he’s been permanently banished from offices. Because, forgiveness? Way easier than permission.

Alun Kendrick, former Queen’s Champion of Faerie’s Seelie Court, takes his job as a psychologist for Portland’s supernatural population extremely seriously. Secrecy is paramount: no non-supe can know of their existence. So when a gods-bedamned human shows up to replace his office manager, he intends to send the man packing. It shouldn’t be difficult — in the two hundred years since he was cursed, no human has ever failed to run screaming from his hideous face.

But cheeky David isn’t intimidated, and despite himself, Alun is drawn to David in a way that can only spell disaster: when fae consort with humans, it never ends well. And if the human has secrets of his own? The disaster might be greater than either of them could ever imagine.

The story text of this second edition of Cutie and the Beast is identical to the first edition.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This was WONDERFUL! If you're a fan of high fantasy - fairies, and curses, and warlocks and vampires ... with a giant sense of humor and some really fun, flirty, sexy romance - this is for you! It's also this great mix of fairy tale 'Beauty and the Beast' mixed in - with a bit of 'Cinderella' too." --Open Skye Book Reviews

"
Cutie and the Beast by E.J. Russell is one of the best paranormal novels I have read in quite a while. With clever characters, witty dialogue and a fast moving plot, the story takes on the classic Beauty and the Beast fable and turns it on its ear." --The Novel Approach

"I will say that from the first page I loved David. His personality, his witty mouth, he's positivity! All of it. I didn't tire of him once. Multiple times he had my sides hurting. He was hilarious! ... If you love high fantasy, a little mystery, awesome revelations, and terrific characters this is so much for you. You'll love the Kendrick brothers and David's Aunts. You'll hate the characters you're meant to and love the ones you long to." --
Diverse Reader

"...my favorite part of this book was the world itself. The rules and setup of the supernatural communities and the various beings were fantastic and utterly spellbinding. I was enthralled from the get go and my interest never wavered. This story so much fun yet had so much more underneath its surface. The fantasy, the depth, the romance, it was all so well done and so cohesive and comprehensive that I give this one 5 very enthusiastic stars and recommend this to all fantasy genre fans." --
Love Bytes Reviews

"Sometimes it's fun to escape. Sometimes you want to read something that will make you smile, laugh, and feel warm and fuzzy inside. CUTIE AND THE BEAST is one of the super fuzzy books! If you love it when our world clashes with the world of fairies, dragons and magic, this book is for you. ... I haven't had this much fun with a PNR in a while."
--All Things Urban Fantasy

"I loved the entire wild ride, from the dull, lifeless office to the magical, glittering world of Faerie. I loved the secondary characters, the clients, the...aunties, and especially Alun's brothers Mal and Gareth (who will be getting their own books in the future, yay!). We have an exciting plot, character growth, great dialogue, beautifully described settings, and it was also freakin' hilarious. What more can you ask from a book?"
--Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

"Overall, I could probably gush all day. From the world building, attention to detail, characterisation, chemistry, variety to allowing us to see equal parts of the Faerie world and the Outer World, it couldn't have been better. Most of all, I love how the whole "beast" aspect was handled. I hoped, because I had learned to appreciate who David was, by the end of the story, but I was still scared about the ending until it happened and I loved that it happened the way it did. I loved every minute and I've already added books 2 and 3 to my To Buy list, for when they release." --
Divine Magazine

"One thing that I did love about this is it wasn't like your normal book - there were twists that happened in the book that caught me so off guard I actually went back and re-read parts of the story to see if I had missed the hints that were dropped. This book had so many different aspects to the story, but it all worked out in the long run. I didn't feel overloaded, or lost. I was so drawn into the story that I just couldn't put it down." --
Crystal's Many Reviews

"The descriptions of the people and places of the Fae are fabulous...you can almost hear the hellhounds barking as the give chase though trickling rivers that morph into raging rapids. Absolutely amazing story telling! ... Overall, Cutie and the Beast by E J Russell is a fabulous gay romance book that is low on heat but filled with great characters and a fabulous story that is quite a page turner. If you are looking for a great fantasy romance book, I definitely recommend this one!" --

I am always pleasantly caught off guard by E. J. Russell because she is a lovely, humble woman. Always expecting sweetness and light, I am delightfully surprised when her books have a fairly large bite. In 'Cutie and the Beast: Fae Out of Water Book 1', we meet temp worker David Evans that manages to start a riot everywhere he goes so he's restricted to transcription work. But his agency offers him a temporary position in Dr. Alun Kendrick's office and there was NO way David was going to mention his permanent banishment from offices. Thrilled by Dr. Kendrick's beautiful voice, David is in no way turned off by his beastly appearance and he sets off to be the best temp ever. In doing so he manages to win the admiration, adoration, and respect of the Alun. David comes to realize that Dr. Kendrick and his patients are all supernatural beings! The wonderful doctor is the former Queen's Champion of Faerie's Seelie Court, having served the position before he was cursed after the death of his lover Owain. Alun has held himself responsible for Owain's death and the massacre of the last know enclave of achubyddion--being capable of healing. It just so happens David is achubydd and his druid aunt's illness results from her using her power to mask his distinctness, keeping him safe from the fae. But the fae finds out David's secret and it's all Alun can do to prevent him from suffering the same fate as Owain. We encounter some hard-hearted fae in this story but it's beautifully moderated by the power of love and David's ability to avoid judgment due to appearances. His tenacity and bravery were an integral part of the novel and were in no way mitigated by his snark and sarcasm. They were many cheerful spots in the book. A description of David's dancing being among the funniest ever. David's character was beautifully rendered due to the superb narration by Joel Leslie Froomkin. Due to his wonderful performance, the story and especially David came to life magically.

This review was originally posted on the Goldilox and the Three Weres blog.

I'd been looking for m/m romance book with Beauty and the Beast elements for a long time when I saw All Things Urban Fantasy post a review of Cutie and the Beast. I was sold and I immediately went to see if it was still on Netgalley. Thank heavens it was! I probably gave my mouse whiplash because I requested it fast after that. And I'm happy to say that it did not disappoint my high expectations! I loved it! It was fun and cute and just plain lovely.

David Evans is a mess. He seems to be a bit unlucky. Wherever he goes, chaos follows. Like riot and drunken fist fight chaos. It gotten to the point where he's been banned from actually working in an office by the temp service he works for even though he's more than qualified to do so. Thanks to an awful flu virus is going around, he gets an assignment he was never meant to have... being the office manager for a psychologist. And not just any psychologist. He's going to go work for Dr. Alun Kendrick, the doctor he's had a crush on since hearing his voice at a medical transcription job.

The thing is Dr. Kendrick is not your normal psychologist. He's a fae lord who treats members of the supernatural community and the occasional supernaturally traumatized human. Alun Kendrick has been dealing with a 200 year curse that has transformed his once perfect face into that of a beast's. Despite being barred from the Seelie Court because of his ugliness, his deformed face works well for him as a therapist. His paranormal patients get to see that everything in his world hasn't been perfect.

I felt for Alun during the whole book. He's one of those characters whose guilty conscience has convinced him that he's not worth being loved. Then in walks David Evans into his life and he turns everything in Alun's life upside down with his caring ways. Poor Alun has no idea what to make of him. David is awkward and he knows it. He has long since accepted it and embraced it. Despite said awkwardness, he is kind and sweet and only wants to help people. He figures as long as he isn't hurting anyone, then it's more than okay to be awkward. It seems to work because he seems to have a natural affinity for making all sorts of supernatural creatures comfortable despite being human.

The book was fun and incredibly creative. It takes place in our world where no humans know that the supernaturals exist. I loved how diverse the supes were in this book! There's the fae both Seelie and Unseelie, vampires, druids, and shifters of all kinds. I also loved the mythology that surrounded this series's version of Faerie and I can't wait to learn more about it.

This book is one I've added to my kindle collection since I've read it and I'm excited to reread it in the future! I loved the heck out of it and I can't wait to get my hands on the next two books that feature Alun's brothers, Mal and Gareth! I need more of the Kendrick brothers in my life!

Cutie and the Beast is the first book in the Fae Out of Water series, a paranormal/fantasy romance series. One of my favorite things about this book is the worldbuilding: E.J. Russell mixes fairytales, folktales, and paranormal standards to create a fascinating world with it’s own unique rules. As the title of the book alludes to, there is an element of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale, but E.J. Russell puts her own spin on that trope which I really liked.

I fell in love with David—he was sweet, adorable, and had a spine of steel. He instantly became one of my favorite characters. His spunk and sass mixed with a caring nature and a determined spirit was refreshing and instantly won me over. Alun was sweet too, underneath all his angst, and I loved how protective he was over David, but still respected him. This was a fun book with an engaging and action-filled plot and sweet romance.

I got aware of the book after stumbling over a visual novel that was based on the book.

I quickly decided to instead read the book, because I enjoyed it much more without all the pictures.
My mind can come up with those on its own 😊

I really don't have anything bad about it, the story wasn't boring nor lacked detail, the characters were three dimensional and the reader could easily sympathise with them.

The dynamic between the main character and his love interest was the of type "grumpy person with a good heart x ray of sunshine without a brain" and I enjoyed it and even had to laugh some time.

I've always been interested in stories about the Fae in all the different ways they could be displayed, so I really enjoyed this aspect of the story as well.

I also loved the fact we got a happy ending with a non-toxic, healthy relationship!

The writing was good, the characters were likeable enough and the plot was predictable, but in a cosy, comfortable way. It's a Beauty and the Beast, retelling, after all; we know what we're getting into. But it's a fresh take and definitely better written than the average paranormal romance and zipped along at a good pace. My favourite thing was the worldbuilding! The author has some fun ideas for urban fantasy, and I loved the main concept -- the protagonists run a therapy clinic for supernatural creatures. I especially loved the author's take on a modern day dragon's hoarding habits... It's a fun, imaginative and entertaining read.
